Dear Colleagues,

Given the amount of work at G.S. right now I'm afraid I am not able to
write the sort of literary shift report I have in the past. Besides,
I normally make fun of Stu Mufson in my shift reports and since he is
around here he might hit me.

This last month has seen the passing of the spring which had lingering
snows and vibrant red poppies, and the coming of the summer which has
accordions, German boy scouts, and the guy who sells large copper
items(motto "It's not summer unless you buy a copper plate big enough
to camp on!"). In the tunnel however things bear a striking
resemblance to .... to pick a random month ... February.

The work in the tunnel can be summed up in three words: WFD, LIP, and
ERP-LUTs.

Yours truly and another graduate student whose name bears a striking
resemblance to mine have been working day in and day out to bring you
WFD data. I might point out that since Chris and I quadrupled the
data rate in MACRO we might very well be the most popular people on
MACRO(if daily irate phone calls and mail messages with references to
donkey anatomy are a good measure of popularity)

The WFD system is now being readout by the ERP, LIP, HIPT, and FMT.
Right now we are reading out a 1ms window and we plan to continue
doing so and either strip off the WFD data or distribute only a small
window around muons for data distribution for those who don't want the
WFD data.

The LIP is now plugged in and working on all SMs. Work is continuing
on optimizing the streamer tube inputs to the LIP and making the inter
SM part of the LIP work. Donato', Allesandro, and Carlo got the PHRASE
running again on SM2(after the arrival of new power supplies).
Alessandro made adjustments to a few PHRASE tanks that I found some
threshold and cable problems on with the LIP.

Stu Mufson(who I will not make fun of, but I might point out is
apparently incapable of cooking himself even a sandwich for dinner.)
was a cable making machine. He made the LIP inter-SM cables out of
the old SM1 PMT cables, and various LEMO cables for the WFD system.
Maurizio also took part in the cable making festivities and is now
certified as a cable maker.

Maurizio also fixed some power supplies and with Ed Michlovic arranged
to ship RPCs to Caltech. Ed continues to work on a tank data base
program.

Maurizio, Ed and Kate have continued to work on shipping up the
calibration system by setting the reference PMT gains etc.

Nat re-arranged some of the CAMAC branches on uVax #1 to make room for
the new TOHM/LI system and then 3 of us spent a few days getting it
working again. I will spare you the details but if you ever plan to
move CAMAC controllers I might suggest you invest in a good goat for
sacrificial purposes.

Kate continued to work on adjusting the ERP LUTs. She claims she is
now close to having it working. Most recently she has been doing
special runs where she reads out the trigger processor bits to better
map out the FADC response. When Rich Baker was here he worked some
on attempting to fix the "0 inhibit fix" which doesn't work on about
half of the ERP supervisors and is necessary to do the special runs
Kate is doing.

Kate has also been investigating the possibility of plugging the Bari
trigger into an ERP box. You should had received a separate note
about this.

After Kate was denied water at the magazzino(apparently Kate is not a
responsible party) we were added to the "list" at the magazzino. The
net effect of this is that we now have a bar code associated with us.
So now, the person at the magazzino can whip the bar code reader over
the item you want to acquire and then the MACRO-USA bar code. Then the
machine will beep, and you will get your item. It is not actually
clear what happens when the system beeps since when we later tried to
track down some items we were told they had no idea how many of the
items had been taken. But at least it beeps....

Stu(who I still haven't made fun of I might point out) and Ernesto
Lammanna measured the positions of all of the steel I-beams in MACRO
for inclusion in GMACRO.

Nat has made a shift-worker shift list which is bound in a book so it
is clear the things a shift worker needs to to.

On the social scene tanti auguri to Erik and Alessandra who will be
married on the 22nd of this month in Greece. A double tanti auguri to
Erik who is now Dr. Erick. Also on the social scene, anyone who can
explain the bottle of inter-venous saline solution in a box with a
meat thermometer that I found in the Caltech apartment should get in
touch with me. I don't know what kind of parties you guys have been
having but next time I want to be invited.

-Chris
