Hi Erik,
I understood. In fact, I don't expect to ever use this data. I
was just pointing out that with MACRO finishing soon you might not want
your tape archives tied up in RAW VMS data format. I'm picturing
something analogous to all the "pizza-tapes" that are lying around
here. With no machine to read the tapes on no one is going to look at the
old data (granted, probably no-one is going to look anyways)
I completely understand your apprehension about ZEBRA, especially
given last weeks problems. But it is the only way MACRO has developed for
exporting tapes to other OS.
I don't mean to complain or get into a VMS vs. UNIX war
(especially since I admit that while I am not used to using it, VMS is
definitely a superior OS, it just costs too much to have caught on). I'm
just pointing this out in case you forsee wanting to use these tapes on
say Caltech's AIX cluster. Maybe you anticipate that DLT support on VMS
machines will be around at Caltech for a while or that these tape will
never leave LNGS, in which case you are fine.
