Supernova Workshop Information
Supernova Workshop Information
September 11-12, 1998
Here is the agenda.
We will have talks in the morning and early afternoon, followed
by discussion sessions. The discussion sessions will be organized into
three parallel groups, charged to work on issues corresponding to
the three main aims of the workshop:
- Group I: The neutrino signal and triangulation: what will the individual experiment
signals look like? How well will it be possible to point to the
supernova by combining neutrino burst timing information from different
neutrino experiments?
- Group II: Inter-experiment connection: alert implementation and data exchange
issues.
- Group III: Connection with the astronomical community: how can we organize
astronomer responses to have the best possible chance of observing early
supernova light?
There will be short afternoon discussion sessions on the first day of
the workshop, followed by short reports from each sub-group to the plenary
group.
There will be longer discussion sessions on Saturday. The workshop will
end with a plenary session to give summaries of the final conclusions of
each discussion group.
Here are more details on the topics for discussion.
To register for the meeting, please fill out the following
registration form
and send it to
schol@budoe.bu.edu
There will be a small registration fee (~$40, payable upon arrival)
to cover the cost of photocopying and coffee breaks.
Here is the list of people who have
registered so far.
The meeting will be held in the Boston University Physics
Research Building, 3 Cummington St., Boston. This is near
the intersection of Commonwealth Ave. and Blandford St., near Kenmore
Square.
We have reserved blocks of rooms at special group rates at two nearby
hotels, The Buckminster (very nearby) and the
Brookline Holiday Inn (a bit farther away but a nicer
hotel than The Buckminster). There are some other hotels in the
vicinity which would not accept block reservations for the time period:
these are the Kenmore Howard Johnson (just across the
street) and The Eliot (fairly close, and very nice but
more expensive); however they may still have individual rooms available
if you reserve soon. These two hotels told me that they would not
accept a BU rate for individual rooms, but it might be worth asking
anyway when you reserve.
You can make your hotel reservation yourself or we will do it for you.

Parking is quite scarce in this downtown area, especially on weekdays.

please let us know in advance if you will need these. You can pick the
permits up at registration, or earlier if you let us know ahead of time.
If you need overnight parking, please check with your hotel. For short
term parking, there are some metered parking spaces on Blandford and
Cummington Streets and other nearby streets.
We have made reservations for a group dinner at the
The Union Oyster House, the oldest eating establishment in the US,
for Saturday September 12 at 7:30 pm. Companions are welcome. If you

- Transportation:
Boston public transportation, known as The
T, is quite good. Short term T passes, called
"Boston Passports",
are available. You may want to get a Passport if you want to do any
touring, or if you are staying at the
Brookline Holiday Inn. If you let us know by September 1, we can pick
one up for you to give you at registration time.
