Dear MACRO Collaborators,

As you know we're now entering the last year of MACRO's running, due to
end in May 2000. As you can imagine, the shift cycle starting next month
is going to be the LAST one in MACRO. This e-mail describes the policies
that your institutional representatives defined during the Caltech
collaboration meeting that just ended for what concerns this last year of
running.

We have considered seriously all your comments, requests, preferences etc
and come up with what we think we'll show once and for all what a great
experiment MACRO has been. Thus, for the last year of running, we will have
shifts arranged as follows:

1) Data shifts will be non-stop, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We have
had inside information that a GC close in our galaxy is eminent. We need
indeed to have people always looking at PHRASE's display waiting for that
single moment. Moreover, increased number of computer hackers, including
several former Caltech undergrads and grads are heard to have been
planning the creation of the perfect fake monopole event in MACRO. You have
been warned. Specially skilled MACRO shiftworkers are expected to monitor
internet traffic in real-time, visually on MACRO's network gateway hubs.
2) Given our newly instituted 24-hour shifts, we'll need more than 60
scintillator physicists to run our experiment for this last year. For this
reason:
o ALL US/Pisa authors will be required to take AT LEAST A WEEK of shift
o due to limited number of authors and in order to come up with the needed
number of shiftworkers you are strongly encouraged to sign up your
children, unlimited number of students, friends etc.
o as we expect to have an overwhelming partecipation, overflow MACRO shift
volonteers will have shifts assigned for MACRO's decomissioning.
3) We will allow "alternative" shifting as long as it serves MACRO's goals:
o e.g. participation in MACRO's soccer team that will meet the corresponding
Italian for MACRO's decennial in the Paganica World Congress Center(PWCC).
The result is potentially publishable.
o visits to Castelli for the creation of the ultimate MACRO-Castelli
anniverary mug
4) All of the above have been decided at the Caltech meeting with majority vote
(Doug's counted for unknown multiplicity).

Best Regards,
--Erik
