Dear MACRO Colleagues,

As you know by now, the next and last MACRO shift schedule starts May 31, 1999
and goes all the way through the official end date of MACRO's running,
May 1, 2000, including a total of 16 data shifts.

This file and future updates appear on MACRO Online at
http://wsgs02.lngs.infn.it:8000/macro/protected/final-shift.txt
You'll have to login with username macro and the known password.

There has been a discussion among institution representatives during the
Caltech MACRO collaboration meeting on the issue of shifts in MACRO. It was
acknowledged the fact that this shift cycle is reduced with less shifts
available respect to the average number of scintillator authors. In addition,
almost everyone is now involved in other projects with significantly
less time and money available (respect to the past) for MACRO shifts.
Finally, various arguments related to the effective contributions of
physicist shiftworkers in running the experiment were discussed, leading
to the conclusion that mixed feelings were comprised by most shifters
in recent times.

The following shift scheme defines the "essential" contribution expected
from MACRO's founding scintillator groups for the next 12 calendar months.
Individual shifts remain as before, i.e., they span over 12 continuous days
starting Monday, continue through the weekend in the middle and end Friday
evening in the second week. The new feature of this last cycle is that there
is a one week pause between two shifts during which no physicist shiftworker
is expected to show up at Gran Sasso (credit for the fundamentals of this
shift scheme goes to Gianrossano Giannini).

We hope the proposed schedule will bring to Gran Sasso people involved
already or with intention to become involved in MACRO analyses, interact with
Italian colleagues, perform specialized calibrations (before we turn MACRO
off), partecipate in working group meetings, work on papers in development,
work on data distribution issues or perform work on detector hardware issues
of interest. As always, please drop me a line before flying in to Italy with
your tentative agenda.
In absence of any agenda or interest on any of the tasks mentioned above,
shift taking will be limited to mere checks of the running of the detector,
making sure we maintain the highest uptime efficiency together with the
best quality data.

In the following schedule I have entered the name of individuals/groups who
have already requested specific shifts in the year to come. Please, check the
number of shifts assigned to your institution, review the available shifts in
the calendar and e-mail me your preference. Please send your preference by
Friday, April 9, 1999; we'll need to post the definitive schedule asap in
order people to arrange travel, other meetings etc.
No back-to-back shifts are allowed and groups with more than one shift should
request them reasonably distant from each other.

Best regards,
--Erik Katsavounidis
