Subject: trip to Kamioka

	Hi Folks,

--------------------------------
How to get to Toyama from Tokyo
--------------------------------
To give some idea how one gets to the Kamioka mine from Tokyo,
the following time-table is exactly what we followed for our
trip by train from Tokyo to the mine in late Feburary 1995.

Tokyo(Station)---> Nagaoka : bullet train (4,000 yen for the
13:08 14:48 supplement and reservation fee)
Nagaoka----------> Toyama : special express (tokkyu, equivalent to
	14:56 16:49 : Inter City in Europe).
: (1,280 yen for the supplement and
				   : reservation fee)
: ticket from Tokyo and Toyama 7,000 yen
: Total cost for one-way trip
				   : Tokyo--->Toyama 12,280 yen including
				   : reservation fees and supplements
: As you can see the connection in Nagaoka
: gives you only 8 minutes! You have to
: change the platform. The best way of
: figuring out which track to go is follow
: the crowd , or read the destination of a
: train (Kanazawa normally) in Japanese or
: departure time in the universal language!
: The departure time is written on your
				   : reservation ticket.

The following table shows the schedule of trains from Tokyo to Toyama
as of March, 1995. It is changed frequently and there many specially
arranged temporary services for the season.

Stay in Toyama
--------------
A stay over night in Toyama at Dai-ichi Inn Toyama right next to the
station costs 8,000 yen. There are other less expensive hotels.
Our favorite hotel (business hotel) is Alpha-1. There are three in
Toyama but this time we stayed at the one in Aramachi for 4,800 yen
per night. It's located in a convinient area; within walking distance
	to the station WITHOUT BAGGAGES.

The following is more info about the trip.

	- Every month the train time table is published. It is inexpensive and
available at most book stores nation wide and it is fun to read. Some
books of the train time tables also contain the time-tables of buses
	  and airplanes.

	- In the mine or the village of Mozumi, no restaurant is available, so
bring your lunch with you. Otherwise you have to go to a restaurant
	  two stations away.

	- There is a hot-spring about half an hour drive from the mine and is
also local ski area. That's what I heard. In winter, it snows a lot,
so driving is a bit tricky. Driving from Tokyo in winter is NOT
	  advisable.

	- In the mine it is advisable to wear rain boots since the ground
is very muddy and full of water.

	- For a short stay, one can stay at a local Inn but for a long stay
Totsuka recommended to rent an appartment in Osawano ( about 30 min
drive). In Toyama you can sample local fresh seafood.
